This activity was created to encourage students to move beyond the specification and explore the paper 2 topics that you don’t teach at your school / college, along with application to current events.
This is great to use as a low stake activity at the end of year 12.
The resource guides students through choosing a specification area, researching a relevant current event, and creating one PowerPoint slide that applies sociological theories, concepts and evidence to the real world.
How I use this resource:
Lesson 1 - Introduce the activity. Students complete stages 1-2
Lesson 2 - Independent student research and creation of presentations.
Lesson 3 - Students to present to each other in small groups
The activity helps students develop confidence in:
- Applying sociology to contemporary examples
- Making links between theory, concepts and evidence
- Developing independent research skills
- Evaluating events from different sociological perspectives
- Creating concise, focused presentation material
