Teach double inequalities with a complete, print-free Year 9 maths lesson built around I Do, We Do, You Do. This editable PowerPoint combines explicit modelling, differentiated practice, assessment for learning and focused work on misconceptions. Project the slides and pupils can respond in exercise books or on mini-whiteboards, without printing pupil worksheets.
WHAT PUPILS LEARN
Pupils interpret linked inequalities as two conditions that must both hold. They apply inverse operations to all three parts, solve one-step and two-step inequalities, reverse both signs when multiplying or dividing by a negative number, and write the resulting interval in increasing order. They identify included and excluded endpoints, list integer solutions and check values by substitution.
I DO, WE DO, YOU DO
Worked examples introduce each method before pupils attempt related questions. The six-question modelling slide uses a three-column by two-row grid with matched teacher and pupil examples. Compact questions at the top leave space for live working.
REAL NUMBER-LINE PRACTICE
Pupils read intervals from diagrams, draw intervals on supplied axes, and solve inequalities before plotting the results. Tasks include integer and half-integer endpoints, with open and closed circles used consistently.
DIFFERENTIATION ON ONE SLIDE
The whole-class task includes eight Developing questions, eight Secure questions, five Greater Depth questions and one Super Challenge. Developing establishes fluency with simple linked inequalities and integer lists. Secure extends to two-step expressions, negative coefficients and checking endpoints. Greater Depth includes constructing an interval with specified integer solutions, combining conditions, a fraction expression and explaining when an interval has no solutions.
The Super Challenge asks pupils to create three equivalent double inequalities with exactly five integer solutions. Ordered instructions specify the starting interval, operations and substitution checks. Complete constructions and worked solutions support discussion of why different-looking inequalities can describe the same set of values.
AFL AND MISCONCEPTIONS
Eight AFL checks help reveal difficulties during teaching. Dedicated misconception slides address operating on only the middle expression and reading a double inequality as an either/or condition. Retrieval, problem-solving, exam-style questions and an exit check provide further opportunities to assess understanding. Answers and mark guidance are included.
