Spooky Spanish: Chestnuts & Ghost Stories
An interactive, homework-ready KS3 Spanish activity on Los Finaos, the Canary Islands’ night of the dead: texts, worksheet, answers. Y7–8.
Halloween, the Canary Islands way!
On the night of 31 October, families in the Canary Islands celebrate Los Finaos. It’s a very old tradition of remembering relatives who have died, gathering to eat roasted chestnuts, and sharing music and memories. Many towns now celebrate it instead of Halloween. This short resource introduces it to Year 7–8 using simple present-tense Spanish, and it takes 15–20 minutes.
Three quick tasks on the interactive page:
• Lee y descubre: a map of the islands, two short texts with tap-to-translate words and audio, then true/false questions.
• La mesa de los Finaos: choose the traditional foods, then give your opinion with me gustan / me encantan… porque son…
• Un cuento de los Finaos: complete a short spooky story (a knock at the door… and nobody there!). The worksheet adds a challenge to write the ending.
