Spooky Spanish: Interactive Halloween Witches

An interactive KS3 Spanish homework on Galicia’s meigas (witches): fill the witch’s cauldron and complete a spell to light the queimada!

“I don’t believe in witches… but they do exist!” In Galician, a meiga is a witch or wise woman, and she can be good or bad. Students meet the healing meiga boa and the vampire-like meiga chuchona, learn the famous saying “Yo no creo en las meigas, pero haberlas, haylas”, and find out about the queimada, the blue-flamed fire ritual of Samaín. Three short, self-checking tasks:

• Lee y descubre: short texts with tap-to-translate words and audio, two illustrated meiga cards, the famous proverb, a keyword match and true/false. • El caldero de la meiga: read the witch's recipe and put the right number of toads, spiders, bats and mushrooms into her cauldron (numbers 0–5 and plurals). Get it right and they drop into the bubbling cauldron! • El conxuro: listen to a spell against the meigas, then fill the gaps. When it's right, the queimada lights up with blue flames!

What’s included
• Interactive HTML page: works offline in any browser, on computers, tablets and phones
• 1-page worksheet that matches the web page
• Teacher page with answers, a cultural note, and the texts with translations
• Optional student vocab list (2 per page, to print and cut)

Perfect for homework: each task unlocks letters of a secret code word. Students write it on the worksheet, so you can see at a glance who finished.

Language covered: present tense; numbers 0–5; un / una + singular and numbers + plural nouns (un sapo → tres sapos); necesito; witches, creatures and spooky vocabulary; listening and reading for meaning in a short cloze.

Pitched for Year 7–8: short sentences, English support throughout, and gap-fills that students can solve by logic.

Flexible use: homework, a starter or plenary, cover lessons, or a Halloween / Samaín lesson (15–20 minutes).

Sensitivity: the queimada is presented as an adult tradition. The resource focuses on the folklore and an original, simplified spell.

VLE tip: upload the HTML file to Teams, Google Classroom or your VLE. Students open it in a browser and their progress is saved on their device.
