Steal the Treasure – Make 10 Addition Game

Practising the Make a Ten Strategy (Addition to 20)
Steal the Treasure is a fun, hands-on maths game designed to help children practise the make a ten addition strategy when adding numbers to 20.
Children use counters on a ten-frame to represent an addition sum, then “steal” counters to make 10 before completing the calculation. This supports strong number sense, partitioning, and mental maths skills.

What’s included:
Steal the Treasure game board (including ten-frames for practical representation)
Game cards (addition to 20 - including part–whole models to support partitioning)
A follow-up worksheet to consolidate learning
Print-ready pages for card or paper
Suitable for laminating and repeated use

How to play:
Children read the addition sum
Counters are placed on the ten-frame
Children “steal” counters to make 10
They explain the new, easier sum (e.g. 8 + 6 = 14 is the same as 10 + 4 = 14)

Ideal for:
KS1 maths
Whole-class maths games
Small-group work
1:1 intervention

This resource helps children move from practical, hands-on learning to independent recording, building confidence with addition strategies to 20.
