The aim of this lesson is to assess the impact of the First World War on the Suffragette movement and consider how far the war helped women move closer to gaining the vote.
Students explore the decision by the Suffragettes to suspend their campaigning during the war and examine the important role they played in supporting the war effort.
They investigate the changing nature of womens’ work as women took on many of the jobs left vacant by men who had gone to fight on the Western Front.
The lesson looks at how these changes affected attitudes towards women and whether their contribution during the war challenged traditional ideas about the roles women could and should play in society.
Students prioritise the different roles undertaken by women during the war and use source evidence to discover what these jobs involved. Four detailed case studies of women provide a fascinating insight into the experiences of women during the war, including the opportunities they were given, the responsibilities they took on and the resistance and male prejudice they continued to face.
The final part of the lesson returns to the question of why women gained the vote. Students consider a range of factors and assess whether the contribution women made during World War I was the main and fundamental reason for the change in voting rights, or whether other factors were equally important.#
The lesson is enquiry based, with a key question introduced through a lightbulb activity at the start and revisited later to show progress in learning and help students develop a supported judgement.
