Back Through the Door: Supported Return Plan

Back Through the Door is a structured, pupil-centred planning pack designed to support young people experiencing school refusal or emotionally based school avoidance. It helps schools turn the broad aim of improved attendance into a specific, predictable and coordinated return plan.

The resource includes six pupil-facing tools:

• My Supported Return Ladder – breaks the journey back into manageable, supported steps
• My Return Plan – makes arrival, lessons, breaktimes, trusted adults and the end of the day more predictable
• If It Gets Hard – identifies early warning signs, help signals, agreed adult responses and a route back after a pause
• Rehearse the First Morning – allows pupils to practise difficult moments and refine the support they need
• My Support Card – provides a discreet reminder of the pupil’s agreed plan and help signal
• My Supported Return Agreement – records the responsibilities of the pupil, school, family and other professionals

Linked adult-planning tools include:

• A family/carer conversation sheet
• A concise staff handover and preparation checklist
• A review tool for monitoring what happened and improving the plan

The pack supports adults to:

• Reduce uncertainty before the pupil returns
• Agree a realistic first step without losing sight of regular attendance
• Coordinate messages and responses across home and school
• Prepare a main and backup adult
• Plan appropriate welcome language and avoid public questioning
• Anticipate difficult or unstructured parts of the day
• Share only the information staff genuinely need
• Review the plan based on what helped, rather than judging the pupil
