Resources for a lesson or two investigating the effect of Surface Area on the rate of reaction. This investigation looks at the reaction of Calcium Carbonate in Acid. Includes a detailed power point with starter activities, description of surface area and practice calculations. Choice of activities, depending on how you will carry out the experiment and a number of plenary options, including a look at increasing the surface area of a cube by breaking it up and some video clips. With less able children you could just visualise the rate of reaction, rather than accurately measuring all of the ingredients. This is detailed quite nicely on one of the clips in the plenary.

Aimed at 12-14 Year olds but can be adapted for different ages and abilities. All worksheets adaptable.
