Get your students excited about their learning with this versatile
resource based on trailers for video games. By examining the
promotional material for well-known games, learners will discover an
easily accessible route into developing wider vocabulary and oracy skills.
By using trailers as a starting point, studying games becomes easily
accessible. No specialist equipment is needed, and learners can use examples
from video games, board games or sports to support their answers.
Through this resource, pupils will develop their oracy skills using a range
of trailers as stimulus material. All the activities in the resource offer
opportunities for exploratory talk, discussion, planning and presentation.
Additionally, there are extension tasks to support the learning of new
vocabulary and the development of new skills, including media literacy.
The resource can also be used to complement learning in a range of
subjects, including English, art, music and media studies. Teachers may
also want to dip into the resource for tutor time and PSHE.
Talking about Games offers teachers flexibility, allowing the freedom
to choose a specific focus, the number of tasks to complete and the
duration of the activity. Teachers can select one or more trailers from
our carefully curated playlist plus a specific focus area for learners to
explore in greater depth.
The class will start the session by discussing what a game is and what
they would expect to see in a trailer for a game. After this introduction,
teachers will select a topic to expand on, choosing from the following:

  • Marketing games
  • Gaming worlds
  • Audience choices
  • Playing games – rules and mechanics
  • Gaming genres and narratives .
