Do your pupils love games? This flexible speaking and listening
resource uses games and game trailers as an accessible starting
point for developing vocabulary, media literacy and oracy skills.
Through a range of short, adaptable activities, learners are
encouraged to talk about games they already know, explore
how trailers communicate ideas and describe the experiences
games can offer players. By examining elements such as sound,
gameplay design and developers’ choices, learners develop the
vocabulary, confidence and communication skills they need to
discuss, explain and justify their ideas.
The resource requires no pre-existing knowledge of games
or game culture.
Activities can be used as stand-alone tasks, combined into a
longer lesson or mixed and matched to suit the needs of your
class. Learners can explore trailers, discuss ideas in groups, plan
creative responses and present their thinking in different ways.
The resource is designed with flexibility in mind. Teachers can
begin with the introductory slides, then choose whether to focus
on one activity area or move between Explore, Discuss, Plan and
Present tasks. The PowerPoint also includes three vocabulary
expansion packs to support learners in using games-related
language with greater confidence.
All activities provide opportunities to develop oracy skills through
exploratory talk, group discussion, planning, presentation and
reflection. The resource can support learning in English, PSHE,
computing, expressive arts, art and design and wider speaking
and listening work.
