How I left teaching after 16 years and became a designer, and how you can start planning your own way out or creative outlet with earning potential, to feel more ‘you’ and fulfilled.

I used to teach DT and FPN in secondary schools for 16yrs. I couldn’t continue to feel burnt out anymore. I decided to go back to my design roots. Being a teacher means you handle so many aspects of being a business owner without realising it, there are many staff (students) many ‘stakeholders’ (SLT and governors) and working with a budget (zero) all while handling your own family, and stress that is incoming rather than your choice.

I have put this workbook together to help you realise that if you want to start something else alongside teaching or work your way out towards a new career, this is how i did it. Not once but twice.

This easy to read and action escape workbook gives you head space to think creatively about other income streams based on your skills. I own a garden and landscape design business now, but your ‘thing’ could be completely different, this explains where i started and tips on things you can do now even as a teacher before you make any big decisions.

Some of the tips to moving careers can also be shared with your students, or used as a case study.

At the end of every chapter you'll find a Thinking Time box: a few questions with space to write your answers straight onto the page. Don't skip them. By the time you reach the back cover, you won't just have read my story; you'll

have started drafting your own plan. You don’t need to have it all figured out.

You just need to begin.
