This is a full lesson designed for the extract from The Explorer’s Daughter by Kari Herbert, which appears in the Edexcel IGCSE Language (4EA1) anthology. Perfect for first teaching or revision.

Lesson stages:

  • Starter: Students are engaged with the moral dilemma of whale hunting. They are given four statements, which they need to support or refute.
  • Class reading with key word definitions and two central discussion questions.
  • Exams practice: Students take on questions in the style of questions 1-3 from the Language A non-fiction Paper 1.
  • Carousel: 5 key quotations on A3 paper are passed around on for students to annotate with analysis. Each quotation has three specific, targeted questions about the language features.
  • Exams practice: An example question 4 is provided, along with a good exemplar paragraph. Students then write their own response to the question using the PETAL framework. Prompts on how to do so are provided.
  • Plenary: students revisit their opinion on whale hunting from the starter. They give a thumbs up, down or sideways to indicate whether they still have the same opinion, or whether the text persuaded them otherwise. They write down one sentence explaining their views.
