The (Incomplete) Lit in Colour Book List 2023 Edition: KS2

This book list has been developed to address a key challenge highlighted in our research with The Runnymede Trust: teachers often find it difficult to source high-quality books by writers of colour for primary classrooms. This annually updated, carefully curated list is designed to make it easier for educators to diversify their English curriculum and inspire a lifelong love of reading.

Our “incomplete” book lists recognise the ever-evolving nature of children’s literature. We commit to reviewing and expanding the selection each year, adding both new and classic titles that reflect the rich variety of voices in modern publishing.

The 2023 KS2 edition features

  • Three dedicated book lists for primary schools, each with over 100 recommended titles from Penguin and leading publishers

  • Organised indexes to help teachers quickly find books by topic, subject, or genre

  • Themed groupings for easy classroom assignment, library development, or pupil reading pathways

  • A blend of contemporary releases and time-honoured classics to suit different reading levels and interests

Perfect for English subject leaders, class teachers, and librarians, the Lit in Colour Book List 2023 Edition: KS2 is an essential tool for building an inclusive, representative, and engaging reading environment in any primary setting.
