This is an extract from the novel 'The Pearl' by John Steinbeck which focuses on the character Kino and how he is becoming more paranoid and obsessive. The extract includes comprehensive annotations along with additional spaces so that students can include their own interpretation to aid deeper analysis. A list of key evaluative and analytical vocabulary has also been added to support this. You could use this resource to work on close analysis language skills or close analysis perspective skill. It is aimed at top set students in KS4, though could be used to push the more able to achieve a grade 9 response through the use of the analytical and evaluative vocabulary on the resource.
