This pack covers AQA specification 6.1.2.2 (including the Higher tier point on increasing efficiency): calculating efficiency with efficiency = useful output energy transfer / total input energy transfer and efficiency = useful power output / total power input, giving it as a decimal or a percentage, and (Higher tier) describing ways to increase the efficiency of an intended energy transfer.
The Topic Mastery Sheet gives both equations, explains why efficiency has no unit and can never be more than 1, and reads values from an original Sankey diagram drawn to scale. Three worked examples cover efficiency from energy, efficiency from power and finding a useful output, with a table of rearrangements. A real example from the UK government’s Digest of UK Energy Statistics 2026 shows the efficiency of coal power stations. The Higher tier section tabulates ways to increase efficiency and how each works. Two exam tips quote the AQA June 2025 examiners’ reports (Physics Paper 1F and Paper 1H). A key vocabulary table gives the exact AQA terms, six common errors are corrected, and the Grade 8-9 stretch section covers the efficiency of a chain of devices.
The Student Exam Practice Sheet (23 marks) has six questions. They progress from a tick-box item, through the efficiency of an LED lamp from a Sankey diagram as a decimal and a percentage, to the useful and wasted power of a winch and a comparison of two drills from a table. A Higher tier 4-mark question on improving a hot-water tank is marked by levels, and the sheet ends with a Grade 8-9 multi-step calculation of the input power of a motor. Questions are numbered and marked in AQA style (01.1, [3 marks], Tick (✓) one box). The answer key follows AQA mark-scheme conventions (allow, ignore, do not accept, dependent marks) and gives the AO and specification reference for every part; Higher tier and stretch items are clearly labelled.
Project the mastery sheet for a ready-made revision lesson, set the practice sheet as homework or a timed check, or use the pack for intervention and independent study. PDF and editable Word versions are both included. Written for AQA GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy (8464); content that appears only in AQA GCSE Physics (8463) is not included. All questions are original. This resource is not endorsed by or affiliated with AQA.
