This pack covers AQA specification 6.3.1.1 and Required practical activity 17: density = mass / volume and rearranging it, converting between g, kg, cm³ and m³, using the particle model to explain the states of matter and differences in density, simple particle diagrams for solids, liquids and gases, and Required practical 17: determining the densities of regular solids, irregular solids and liquids.
The Topic Mastery Sheet sets out the density equation with every unit, marked as a Recall equation, with worked examples finding a density and a volume and a table of every rearrangement. A units table shows how to convert grams, cubic centimetres and g/cm³ into SI units. Original particle diagrams and a comparison table explain why solids and liquids are much denser than gases. Required practical 17 is covered with a table of the measuring instruments for regular solids, irregular solids and liquids, an original displacement can diagram, good practice, errors to avoid and safety. An exam tip quotes the AQA June 2025 Physics Paper 1H examiners’ report. A key vocabulary table gives the exact AQA terms, six common errors are corrected, and the Grade 8-9 stretch section shows why 1 g/cm³ equals 1000 kg/m³.
The Student Exam Practice Sheet (26 marks) has six questions. They progress from a tick-box unit conversion, through particle diagrams to identify, describe and use to explain a difference in density, to a liquid density calculation from balance readings and an irregular stone measured by displacement from a diagram of two measuring cylinders, with ways to make the volume accurate. A rearrangement for the mass of milk in a farm tank and an explanation of what happens to its density when it warms follow, and the sheet ends with a 6-mark method for finding the density of a rectangular block, marked by levels. Questions are numbered and marked in AQA style (01.1, [3 marks], Tick (✓) one box). The answer key follows AQA mark-scheme conventions (allow, ignore, do not accept, dependent marks) and gives the AO and specification reference for every part, with RPA17 on the required practical items; the 6-mark question uses AQA’s own level descriptors for practical methods.
Project the mastery sheet for a ready-made revision lesson, set the practice sheet as homework or a timed check, or use the pack for intervention and independent study. PDF and editable Word versions are both included. Written for AQA GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy (8464); content that appears only in AQA GCSE Physics (8463) is not included. All questions are original. This resource is not endorsed by or affiliated with AQA.
