Teach translation with an editable 88-slide Year 9 maths PowerPoint. Clear coordinate grids support drawing images, describing translations with column vectors, finding original shapes and explaining why a transformation is or is not a translation.
Designed for print-free teaching: project the questions while pupils work in exercise books or give short responses on mini whiteboards. Drawing tasks use pupils’ own coordinate grids.
I DO, WE DO, YOU DO
Three matched pairs cover drawing a translated image, finding a column vector from corresponding vertices and working backwards to recover the original shape. The six-question I Do / We Do overview includes small diagrams and space for teacher working. Enlarged examples and worked answers follow.
Further examples cover horizontal and vertical translations, drawing from a column vector and distinguishing translations from reflections and enlargements.
32 QUESTIONS ACROSS TWO PRACTICE PAGES
Each page uses one shared coordinate grid containing six labelled triangles. Pupils identify images and original shapes, describe movements, combine translations, find missing movements, correct errors and justify whether one vector can satisfy two conditions. Drawing and coordinate questions develop alongside reasoning about repeated translations and the position of a whole shape.
ONE-PAGE DIFFERENTIATED TASK
Six Developing questions, six Secure questions and four Greater Depth questions share one diagram. The entry questions begin with counting horizontal or vertical movement. Greater Depth explores simultaneous conditions, halfway images, translations into a quadrant and whether a non-zero translation can map a triangle onto itself.
The Super Challenge appears on the same differentiated page. Pupils find every integer translation that places a triangle strictly inside a specified region and prove that their list is complete. An enlarged challenge and worked solution extend this to reversing the translations.
CHECK UNDERSTANDING THROUGHOUT
