Children have thoughts all day long – but understanding what a thought actually is can be an important first step in helping them make sense of their experiences.
Understanding Thoughts is a psychology-informed emotional literacy and ELSA resource for children aged 8–11, helping them understand what thoughts are, notice their own thoughts and begin exploring how thoughts can connect with feelings and behaviour.
Using the simple, child-friendly explanation “Thoughts are the words and pictures our brains make”, the toolkit introduces thoughts without labelling them as positive or negative, helpful or unhelpful, right or wrong.
Children explore thoughts that might show up in everyday situations before becoming curious about their own experiences. The aim is not to teach children to replace thoughts with more positive ones, but to help them develop the awareness and language to notice and talk about what their brain is doing.
Understanding Thoughts provides a foundation for later conversations about feelings, behaviour, worry, anxiety and other experiences. Activities encourage curiosity rather than looking for a single “right” answer, with space for each child to describe their own experience.

Emotional Literacy Toolkit Bundle – ELSA & SEND Ages 8–11

A psychology-informed emotional literacy toolkit bundle for children aged 8–11, designed for ELSA, SEND, pastoral and wellbeing support. Thoughts, feelings, body clues and behaviour are all part of a child’s experience – but children don’t always have the words or understanding to make sense of how they fit together. The Curious Brain Foundation Series brings together four connected printable toolkits, helping children develop a shared language for understanding their own experiences. Rather than teaching children how they should think, feel or behave, the resources encourage them to notice what’s happening, get curious and recognise that experiences can look different for everyone. FOUR CONNECTED TOOLKITS Understanding Thoughts Explore thoughts as the words and pictures our brains make and notice thoughts that show up in everyday situations. Understanding Feelings Develop language for noticing and exploring feelings and individual emotional experiences. Understanding Body Clues Notice sensations and changes in the body and explore what these can be like for different people. Understanding Behaviour Explore what we do and get curious about what might be happening around and inside us, rather than labelling behaviour as good or bad. Together, the toolkits provide a foundation for later conversations about worry, anxiety and overwhelm. WHAT’S INCLUDED Each toolkit contains: • 1 illustrated Learn page • 3 practical Explore activities • 1 Adult Guide 20 printable pages across four complete toolkits. FLEXIBLE FOR SCHOOL-BASED SUPPORT There is no set programme to follow. ELSAs, SENCOs and pastoral staff can choose individual activities, select pages relevant to the child they are supporting or explore the four areas gradually over time. No specialist psychology knowledge is required. USEFUL FOR • ELSA sessions • SEND and pastoral support • Emotional literacy and self-awareness • Anxiety, worry and wellbeing support • 1:1 or small-group work • Supportive or therapeutic conversations Psychology-informed and neurodiversity-affirming, with an emphasis on understanding the individual child rather than assuming there is one “right” way to think, feel or respond. Created by Dr Sarah Cook, HCPC Registered Clinical Psychologist. The Curious Brain Toolkit™ – practical, child-friendly psychology resources that help children and adults understand their experiences before exploring what might help.
