This lesson is part 1 of 5 lessons that cover the entire content of learning Aim A.

This lesson is designed to emphasise the importance of accurate measurements and add more context to the assignment brief.

This lesson is also designed to cover errors, importance of calibration, accuracy and precision and measuring accuracy and precision through calculating absolute error, percentage difference, absolute uncertainty and percentage uncertainty. These skills will be required to write thorough and strong evaluations at the end of the practicals.

By covering this content at the start, the aim is to encourage students to reflect on their practice and prepare them for their distinction criteria and learning aim D as they work through the practical elements over the upcoming lessons.

Layout of the lesson
•What are the key elements of a scientific report and what content is expected in each section
•Introducing the main components of learning aim A
•The importance of accurate measurements in chemistry linked to real-life examples of important measurements
•The difference in accuracy vs precision followed by a student task to build confidence with these key terms
•What systemic and random errors are followed by a student task to build confidence with identifying these types of errors and their consequences
•The importance of calibration and how uncalibrated equipment can lead to systemic errors
•Calculating equipment uncertainty and accuracy of results followed by student task
