This first module of Unplugged Coding (Codage sans ordinateur) has 14 pages: nine student pages, one enrichment page, a two-page answer key and two pages for the teacher, with the lesson plan and notes. All materials are in French.
It first explains what coding is, with the rover that drives on Mars, then everything happens in pencil on a grid of eight columns and eight rows, with a robot that knows only three instructions: AVANCE (move forward), TOURNE À DROITE (turn right) and TOURNE À GAUCHE (turn left). Page 2 settles the most common mistake in one sentence: « Tourner, ce n’est pas se déplacer. » (Turning is not moving.) After an example done together with the trace table, students follow longer and longer codes, predict the arrival before filling in the table, then fix a code that misses its target by changing a single instruction. At the end, they write the code themselves to bring the robot from B7 to F3.
You can use this module on its own as a first introduction to coding, or as the starting point of the collection, which has six modules and a summative assessment.
