Teach unsupervised learning as evidence-based pattern discovery, not just as “running a clustering algorithm.”

This complete FA Learning teaching unit gives students a structured route from understanding what changes when labels disappear to choosing clustering methods from data geometry, evaluating cluster quality and reporting segments responsibly.

Across four 40-minute lessons, students learn to define similarity, recognise the effect of feature scale, compare K-Means and DBSCAN, interpret hierarchical clustering and Gaussian Mixture Models, and use more than one kind of evidence before accepting a clustering result.

The unit keeps one core habit visible throughout: clusters are useful only when students can explain how similarity was defined, why the chosen algorithm fits the data, what evidence supports the result and what limitations remain.

Lesson 1 introduces unsupervised learning, similarity and scaling. Students examine how distance can change when features use different units and why preprocessing matters before clustering.

Lesson 2 compares K-Means and DBSCAN. Students connect algorithm choice to geometry, density, noise and the assumptions each method makes.

Lesson 3 introduces hierarchical clustering and Gaussian Mixture Models, helping students compare hard assignments, nested structure and probabilistic membership.

Lesson 4 focuses on evaluation and responsible reporting. Students combine internal evidence, visual structure and practical interpretation, then profile clusters without turning statistical groups into unsupported claims about people.

Teacher-facing materials provide ready questions, expected answers, misconception repair, support, extension and evidence to look for during each lesson. Student resources provide structured practice in similarity, scaling, algorithm choice, cluster interpretation, evaluation and responsible reporting.

FA Learning resources are designed to be classroom-ready, practical and evidence-focused, helping teachers move from explanation to guided practice, discussion and assessment without needing to search for additional materials.

Suitable for Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Science, Data Science, Python/AI enrichment and secondary or post-16 computing courses.

Key topics: Unsupervised Learning, Clustering, K-Means, DBSCAN, Hierarchical Clustering, Gaussian Mixture Models, Similarity, Feature Scaling, Cluster Evaluation and Responsible AI.
