Lesson 1-5: This 5 LESSON POWER POINT is part of a Double-set of Power Points that strive to explore ‘The Times’ against all of RAIL and Contexts. This first five lesson Power Point looks at Media Lang and Representation and covers:

-An in-depth 4 page assessment of key Newspaper terms and newspaper ideologies from prior learning.
-Course of the eye, anchorage and Rule of Thirds.
-Rowland Barthes and codes
-Selection and Combination
-The New World historical context
-Claude Levi Strauss and structualism
-A 15 marker peer assessment of a Teacher Exemplar and then the students attempt it themselves.
-Active Learning political spectrum task
-Stuart Hall’s theories of representation
-YOU GOV Press ideologies survey analysis
-Creation of a revision resource with template included.
-Media Battleships:

Split into groups of two.

One will argue for, the other against.

You will have a sheet of paper which you will pass to and fro.

You are not allowed to speak.

We will hear back peoples discussions at the end. The first to run out of ammunition, sinks!

QUESTION: Should freedom of the press mean exactly that or should newspapers, especially tabloids, ensure they do not embellish the truth and remain objective? Isn’t it the readerships responsibility to fact check or is the Media integral to the construction of peoples ideologies.

NOTE: All task sheets, differentiated resources and audio/visual stimuli are included within the lesson/ Power Point. This resource includes H/W and a Mastery Sheet on a 30 marker question.

NOTE: I am following EDUQAS Teaching Model 1 in my teaching/ SOW and my school is only providing Media Studies at a AS/A2 Two- Year Course. If you liked this resource and found it useful, it would be greatly appreciated if you could feedback or rate my resource as I am constantly trying to adapt and refine my resources to improve the learning of my students. Many thanks.
