Using Clocks is a complete Year 7 Core maths lesson designed for confident whole-class teaching without worksheets or printing.

The lesson begins by securing conversion between 12-hour and 24-hour notation before pupils apply that knowledge to analogue clock faces. The digital section follows a tightly matched I Do–We Do–You Do sequence: three paired examples with large modelling space, an I Do reveal, consolidated We Do solutions, and exactly 12 immediate mini-whiteboard checks, each followed by its answer.

Independent practice includes 24 carefully varied conversion questions arranged in column order. A single differentiated task provides Developing, Secure and Greater Depth routes, followed by a full-width Super Challenge and separate worked solution. Questions address leading zeros, am and pm, noon, midnight, common misconceptions and reasoning about equivalent times.

The analogue section uses fewer, larger questions so the clock diagrams remain clear when projected. Pupils read hour and minute hands, sketch hands from worded and digital times, use morning, afternoon and evening context, and record times in words, 12-hour notation with am or pm, and 24-hour notation. It progresses through o’clock, half past, quarter-hour and five-minute intervals before comparison, short-duration reasoning, exam-style questions and an exit check.
