Using Number Lines is a complete Year 7 Core mathematics lesson delivered through an editable, standalone and print-free PowerPoint. It is designed for the Core pathway and focuses on the Number strand, helping pupils read, place and interpret integer values on number lines by identifying equal intervals and using tick positions accurately.
The lesson begins with prerequisite retrieval so pupils revisit counting in equal steps, subtraction, division, comparison and interval reasoning before moving into the new learning. Key vocabulary such as number line, tick mark, endpoint, scale, interval and midpoint is introduced clearly, followed by a Frayer model for interval size.
The teaching sequence follows I Do – We Do – You Do. I Do provides clear teacher modelling that makes the method visible: pupils see how to find the total change, divide by the number of intervals and build the scale step by step, including examples that cross zero. We Do gives guided examples and mini-whiteboard checks so the teacher can assess understanding before pupils practise independently. You Do then moves into carefully sequenced practice, including minimally different questions and differentiated Developing, Secure, Greater Depth and Super Challenge tasks.
The lesson also includes explicit misconception work on confusing ticks with intervals and mishandling negative endpoints. Pupils then apply the idea through problem solving, a challenge task requiring all possible scales, and exam-style questions with mark guidance. The exit check provides a final opportunity to assess whether pupils can calculate interval sizes, read tick values and explain their reasoning.
This resource is suitable for whole-class teaching, targeted intervention, revision or a cover lesson where pupils can work from the displayed slides in exercise books or on mini-whiteboards. The PowerPoint is fully editable, so teachers can adapt examples, timings or challenge level to suit their class.
The download contains the complete editable Core PowerPoint lesson, including all teaching slides, pupil tasks, worked examples, assessment opportunities, reasoning tasks, exam-style questions and answer slides. No separate worksheet is required.
