This is a whole week of colourful, attractive, recap material aimed at putting as many of the skills required for success at foundation GCSE in front of students as often as possible. It is the first in a new series. It is a 28-slide powerpoint with distinct beginning, middle and end exercises. All answers are given too (from slide 15).
The powerpoint slides can be converted to pdfs and printed onto A4 or A3 paper. A3 is perfect. It fills a student’s desk and there is plenty of white space to work in. If your students have Ipads and Ipad pencils, then they can download the PDF into an app such as GoodNotes.
The beginning picks a basic skill - week one is fractions - that ramps up in difficulty over the four days. Helpful Handy Hint boxes aim to ease any hand-up pressure on teacher and assistants. The answers to the first 10 questions are deliberately all the same, placing emphasis on showing workings and allowing a student to establish a pattern as they proceed. The final two questions require the student to bring together a number of their answers and then make their own question.
The middle exercise mimics the interleaving nature of a typical GCSE exam paper, skipping from one discipline to another. Again, there are Handy Hint boxes, most commonly on Day One. The subject of each of the 12 questions remains the same on all four days of one week, but the question becomes slightly more complex as the days go by. Students will want to keep their previous days’ work to be able to answer the final question on the fourth day. This breaks down questions in a way that will help foundation students to conquer those troublesome multi-mark questions.
The end exercise is a multi-mark, exam-style question displayed attractively on one sheet. Again, the question remains the same throughout the four days - but details change.
