This lesson explores a deceptively simple question through the lens of real sport: what truly motivates us to achieve extraordinary things?

When cyclist Valgren won stage 17 of the Giro d’Italia, he credited his son but this raises profound philosophical questions about personal drive, sacrifice, and the power of love to reshape our ambitions. For students aged 11–13, this topic is timely and deeply personal: they’re beginning to understand their own motivations and values, navigating peer pressure, family expectations, and their emerging sense of self.

By engaging with Valgren’s story through movement-based discussion (Your Corner and Step Into Their Shoes), students develop crucial skills: perspective-taking, empathetic listening, and the ability to hold multiple truths at once. They’ll discover that motivation isn’t single or simple it’s layered, contextual, and profoundly human.

This lesson helps young people ask themselves: why do I do what I do? And why do the people I care about matter in that answer?

P4C Newsroom gives educators the tools to provide something different. We take the stories that are in the news right now, give them the real facts, and create space for genuine debate where they construct their own opinions on what matters. We have no political agenda. Just balanced information and structured discussion that builds thinking skills they actually need.

Educators get complete, ready-to-teach lesson packs. Students get debates in a safe, controlled, constructed environment where they can construct their own opinions on contemporary issues and their reasoning is what counts. Parents see their children becoming thoughtful about the world and confident in their own voice. Every lesson builds critical thinking and oratorial skills that schools need, with natural alignment to Theory of Knowledge. Over two thousand students engage with P4C Newsroom every week. There is nothing quite like it.
