This 20-slide lesson explores Elizabeth Brewster’s poem, ‘Where I Come From’.

Pupils are encouraged to think about how place (and upbringing) impacts our identity before learning about the life and work of the poet. A summary of the poem is given before delving into some of the key symbols.

Line-by-line questions are asked to facilitate close analysis from pupils. We then discuss the poem’s use of contrasts and analyse the form, structure, rhythm and rhyme. Pupils are given tools to explore the poem’s speaker and their tone, before key themes and key vocabulary are provided to facilitate high-level analysis.

The lesson ends with a series of comprehension questions and ‘critical thinking’ questions for deeper analysis. An essay-style question is included at the end.

The PowerPoint is saved as a PDF.
