The lesson is designed to support foundation and core students studying the AQA, Edexcel, or OCR GCSE History courses on the USA, 1920–1973, or the Roaring Twenties. It is also easily adaptable for KS3 classes introducing American history.
The resource includes a PowerPoint presentation and an accompanying worksheet, both provided in Microsoft Office format for full editing and in PDF format for quick printing.
The PowerPoint features a keyword snowballing starter, accessible information slides, and a thinking skills review triangle activity on why prohibition was introduced to encourage group discussion and reflection. It also includes a range if source analysis tasks built around the Anti-Saloon League and Women’s Christian Temperance Movement’s leaflets and posters. To help contextualise learning, an additional starter activity invites students to consider modern laws around underage drinking and compare them with early 20th-century attitudes toward alcohol.
The worksheet content mirrors that of the PP, but includes additional questions and activities which can be used independently of the worksheet,
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to explain what Prohibition was, understand why different groups supported it, and evaluate the wider causes behind its introduction. The activities develop key GCSE History skills such as analysing cause and consequence, assessing economic factors, and making supported judgments.
Engaging, flexible, and classroom-tested, this lesson provides a clear and thought-provoking introduction to one of the most significant social experiments in U.S. history.
