WINDOW OF TOLERANCE WORKBOOK - FOR USE WITH PRIMARY AGE CHILDREN IN SCHOOL AND AT HOME.
The Window of Tolerance guidance helps parents and teachers understand the range of emotional and physiological states in which children can learn, relate, and function effectively. Developed from neuroscience and trauma research, the concept explains that when a child is within their “window,” they can manage emotions, focus, and respond flexibly to challenges. Stress, anxiety, or trauma can push them outside this zone, leading to hyperarousal (fight/flight) or hypoarousal (shutdown). The guidance equips adults with strategies to recognise these states, respond calmly, and support children in returning to their optimal zone. For parents, it offers tools to nurture emotional regulation at home; for teachers, it provides approaches to create safe, supportive classrooms. By expanding a child’s window through consistent, compassionate support, adults can promote resilience, improve behaviour, and enhance learning outcomes, ensuring children feel secure, understood, and ready to engage with the world.
