Ready for the FIFA Football World cup 2026? - This lesson uses a “Development Indicator World Cup” simulation/game to explore whether football success is linked to levels of development. Students begin by considering why football is the world’s most popular sport, linking their ideas to geography concepts such as globalisation, culture and inequality. They then take part in a competitive Top Trumps-style game using real development indicators, comparing countries in their World Cup 2026 groups before progressing through knockout rounds to determine a “Development indicators World Champion.” Following the game, students reflect on whether FIFA rankings align with development indicators and evaluate patterns, anomalies, and possible explanations. The lesson concludes with a structured discussion and exit ticket focused on the extent to which football success is shaped by development compared to cultural and historical factors, encouraging students to make evaluative, evidence-based geographical judgements.
Great introduction lesson to any GCSE/Alevel course that has a section on ‘development/ devleopment indicators’.
