YEAR 6 JURASSIC WORLD MATHS PROJECT

This Maths project has been designed and developed for Year 6 pupils. Also suitable for a lower Year 7/8 set or an able Year 5 set (if the topics below have been taught).
Elements of the project are cross-curricular and could be done outside of Maths lessons.

Pupils design and create (on a scaled map) their own Jurassic World Island. They are responsible for managing their budget, deciding how and on what to spend their money and the design and layout of their islands.

It is broken into 3 parts currently. A fourth may well follow soon!

There is no written planning with these worksheets, as the activities are pretty much self-explanatory.
They are numbered in a suggested order but there is plenty of scope to vary.

I have always had pupils working in similar ability pairs for this project - enabling differentiation.

All the activity sheets are Microsoft Word documents so the size/complexity of the numbers can be altered to differentiate the activities.

The project incorporates a huge variety of Maths topics of Year 6 and beyond. These are listed below.

Maths Topics:

Budgeting and managing expenditure
Area and perimeter
Ratio and scaling
Working with up to 6 figure numbers (or less if adapted) frequently in the context of money
Four operations calculations, including working with pounds/pence regularly
Ratios and scaling
Radius and diameter
Percentages and fractions of amounts
Estimation
Daily income/cost balance sheets
Distance/time ratio calculations
Mean, median, mode and range
Using formulae to describe sequences
Volume of cuboids
Area of circles
Volume of spheres and surface area of spheres
…And lots more!

HERE IS WHAT IS INCLUDED:

Part 1:
See Part 1 files

Part 2:
• Designing a hotel for guests - costing up different sized designs (costs based on area)
• Purchasing paving/bridges to enable guests to walk around the park to enclosures and hotel
• Fitting security towers for dinosaur surveillance - ensuring the radius of cover spans as much of the enclosures as possible
• Purchasing gift shops, restaurants and toilets - different sizes generate different amounts of income and have different running costs
• Calculating profit from gift shops, restaurants and toilets if hotel was at maximum capacity
• Using ratio to calculate how long it takes guests to walk around the island
• Exploring the difference in average dinosaur weights: looking at mean, median and mode
• Calculating the amounts of dinosaur food required using ratio linked to dinosaur body weight
• Designing a port and purchasing ferries following an investment from a sponsor
• Creating an inventory of all assets
• Working out the island star rating (half self-assessed by pupils and half teacher-assessed)
