This lesson introduces students to the tools geographers use to measure development. Through maps, data cards and comparison tasks, pupils explore the difference between economic and social indicators and analyse why relying on a single measure—such as wealth—can give a misleading picture of a country’s wellbeing. The lesson also breaks down the Human Development Index (HDI) in a simple, accessible way, helping students understand how multiple indicators combine to give a more accurate view of development.

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

Define a development indicator

Explain the difference between economic and social measures

Analyse why using just one measure can be misleading

Understand how the Human Development Index (HDI) works

This ready‑to‑teach PPT and worksheet set builds strong data‑handling skills, supports comparative thinking and prepares students for deeper analysis in later lessons.
