**Can they solve 8 − 3… but 13 − 4 means counting everything again?
**
A targeted Year 1 maths intervention for children who understand what addition and subtraction mean, but are not yet secure or efficient when calculating within 20.

Part of the Piece Together 10-Minute Maths Catch-Up range, this pack develops calculation fluency through concrete, pictorial and increasingly mental strategies, while keeping the focus on the specific gap rather than reteaching a whole unit.

The pack begins with a short Starting Point Assessment to identify where support is needed and route the child to the most appropriate session.

The six intervention sessions focus on:

  • Adding efficiently within 10
  • Subtracting efficiently within 10
  • Adding to and subtracting from teen numbers
  • Adding across 10 by making 10
  • Subtracting across 10 by bridging through 10
  • Choosing an efficient strategy and understanding the effect of adding or subtracting 0

The pack is aligned with the England Year 1 National Curriculum requirement to represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20, and to add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including 0.

If number bonds are not yet secure, children can be routed back to the relevant Number Bonds intervention before continuing.

Once calculation within 20 is secure, the next Piece Together step is Missing Number Problems.

No planning required - designed to be picked up and used by a teacher or TA.
