Calculate elapsed time across the hour with Year 3 timeline activities, missing start and finish times, worked examples and answers.
Help pupils understand why time calculations use 60 minutes per hour. A worked example shows how to split a duration into manageable jumps on an open timeline.
WHAT IS INCLUDED
• Teacher guidance with prerequisites, support and extension ideas.
• A worked example showing how to bridge the hour.
• Guided timeline practice.
• Duration problems within one hour and across the hour.
• Activities for finding missing start and finish times.
• School-morning word problems.
• Error-analysis and explanation tasks.
• Three-question start and finish checks.
• Answers for all tasks, with example explanations.
HOW TO USE
Begin with the start check. Model how to label the start time, the next whole hour and the finish time. Count the minutes in each jump, then add them together.
Choose one or two practice pages per session. Use the explanation tasks to discuss mistakes and encourage pupils to check their answers using a different method.
Suitable for small-group teaching or independent practice after instruction.
SUITABILITY
Designed for Year 3 pupils, typically aged 7–8. Pupils should already read digital times to five minutes and know that one hour contains 60 minutes.
Calculations use five-minute steps. All events take place within the same morning, with no noon or midnight crossings. Open timelines are thinking tools and are not drawn to scale.
The start and finish checks are informal classroom activities, not standardised assessments.
