KS2, Year 3 Stone Age Art Planning (History Linked) – 6 lessons exploring prehistoric art, cave paintings and Lion Man through drawing, painting & sculpture.

This six-lesson Year 3 Art and Design unit explores the exciting world of Stone Age and prehistoric art, with a focus on drawing, painting and sculpture. Pupils investigate what it means to be one of the “first artists” and study real prehistoric artefacts, including the famous Lion Man sculpture.

Across the sequence, children develop key skills in observational drawing, colour mixing, and creating tints, tones and shades. They explore drawing techniques such as cross-hatching and produce anatomical-style sketches inspired by prehistoric animals, including the woolly mammoth. Pupils also learn about global cave art, experimenting with stencilling, handprint painting, and textured surfaces using charcoal.

The unit culminates in a final personal response where pupils design and create their own cave-inspired artwork, combining painting, drawing and expressive techniques to represent their own lives through symbolic imagery.

This engaging unit provides clear progression, strong sketchbook development, and creative outcomes linked to the Stone Age history curriculum.
