Year 5 Space Art 5 Week Medium Term Plan

This five-lesson art and design unit introduces Year 5 pupils to the bold, abstract style of artist Peter Thorpe.

Children explore space-themed compositions through drawing, painting and collage, experimenting with techniques such as marbling, salt and bleach resist, and layered backgrounds. Sketchbook activities encourage exploration of proportion, shape, and contrasting colour palettes.

The sequence culminates in a striking final piece: a mixed-media space artwork combining textured backgrounds with carefully composed rockets, planets, and abstract forms.
