Here is a set of arithmetic starters which I use daily with my current Year 6 class. I call these 'Terrific Tens' and we do them for 10 minutes a day at the start of each Maths lesson. I put three songs on Youtube for the children to listen to whilst completing the tests (the winners from each session then choose the next songs!) and depending on what I assess my class at and the difficulty of the paper, give them an amount of time to complete the page. I then model how to answer each question and the children mark their own. I do not collect the scores up as, at the start of the year, my children were nervous about their scores. However, I now find they are so enthusiastic about sharing their scores as they are proud of what they have achieved! My children absolutely LOVE these and since doing these each day, the results in our termly arithmetic test have significantly improved.

In this resource, there are 100 days worth of 10 arithmetic questions. On each page, there is a set of 10 arithmetic style questions which I have created myself by using the Maths objectives alongside examples of previous Arithmetic questions. These questions are mixed up, as they will be in the test they face next May. This helps the children to apply their knowledge. I have tended to focus on the more challenging questions (e.g. dividing fractions, mixed number subtractions etc...) rather than times tables, as this is what my class needed to ensure they are getting 35+ on every arithmetic paper.

Currently, after using these Terrific Tens, 74% of my class of 31 pupils scored 35+ marks on the last Arithmetic paper we sat [December 2017]. This is comparative to just 6% of pupils on the initial entry assessment in September 2017. I firmly believe that daily Arithmetic through this Terrific Tens has supported my children with this and I will be continuing these up until SATs.

I have also included an Arithmetic loop card game I have created which my children absolutely love! Reasoning:- This is a130 slide power-point presentation which I have developed for my class of Y6 children who are finding the Reasoning SATs papers a little tricky! I was conscious that there is sometimes little room for Reasoning when so much of my lessons were skills based; this also reflected within my assessment papers. My class now do ‘Maths Rocks’ every morning. Maths Rocks is between 3-7 Reasoning questions which my children complete on a daily basis. I have given them a new Maths Rocks book and they come in each morning with the power-point on the board. Independently, they work through each question. We then go through them together, I model the answer and we discuss any misconceptions. I don’t collect scores in, but the more children become confident with the style of question, the more willing they are to share their scores! There are 130 pages to this presentation, each with between 3-7 questions on. The questions are a variety of questions about a mixture of subjects to ensure I am reinforcing the children’s learning.

Year 6 SATs Maths Revision - daily

This bundle combines daily Maths revision for Year 6 pupils facing the SATs tests in May 2019. Maths has been a severe weakness in my class over the past two years. The retention of my pupils was poor and it led me to develop different teaching methods to expose pupils more frequently to the Arithmetic and Reasoning questions they were going to face. To target my problems, I developed two resources to support me: 1. Terrific Tens 2. Maths Rocks Terrific Tens: Arithmetic revision I found that pupils were forgetting the methods taught for Arithmetic, even though we had spent a long time learning them. This was because pupils did not often enough have the opportunity to revisit and use the methods. To target this, I developed something called 'Terrific Tens' - a set of ten questions which the pupils complete every day independently. These questions - which I have made up myself - focus on all areas of the arithmetic paper and enable pupils to apply methods out of context. How I run the terrific tens: Every morning I give my pupils 10-15 minutes to complete the questions. Pupils who score "terrific tens" choose music to listen to the following day. I do not collect the scores in, but what I have found is that pupils love to share their scores with me anyway! Maths Rocks - Reasoning revision: As arithmetic improved, reasoning remained low. To target this, I give my pupils a selection of reasoning questions every morning for them to work independently on. The questions are a complete variety of everything pupils may find on the Reasoning papers they willf ace in May. We then mark the questions together and myself or confident pupils model the answers. Both of these resources have had a significant impact on my pupils' learning. This bundle results in 38% off the original price.
