This is a maths lesson to support Year 6s with finding the mean. This was something that had been tested when my Year 6s were sitting a past paper and I found they had no idea, particularly the boys. As I have a boy heavy year group who are sometimes hard to enthuse, I have linked this lesson to football.

There is a detailed powerpoint which explains finding the mean as an average and allows the children an opportunity to identify why/how this can be used in a real life context. On the powerpoint, there are three activities for the children to complete on wbs, to put into practice the things they have learnt.

The main activity is a ‘finding the mean treasure hunt’. There are 12 cards, which are linked to 12 Premier League teams. On each card, there is a set of data which reveals something about the football team: it may be the average age of a defender, or a midfielder. I strung these cards up around our school field, and children hunted them down, working in pairs and answering the questions on their answer sheet.

Once the children had completed the questions, I modelled them using the document on the SMART board and addressed any misconceptions that had arisen.

My class LOVED this activity and when I have revisited it during OMS, children always remember the “fun football activity!”
