This 60-minute Year 9 Food Technology lesson focuses on developing students’ planning and organisation skills in preparation for a practical assessment.
Students work in groups using clearly defined roles to create a detailed, realistic time plan for their chosen dish.
Using a shared document, learners break down their practical into preparation, cooking, presentation and cleaning stages. They allocate timings, responsibilities, equipment, and ingredient quantities, ensuring the dish can be completed safely and successfully within a one-hour practical lesson.
The lesson includes a structured starter to emphasise the importance of time planning, role-based success criteria to ensure accountability, and guided use of AI as a research support tool to check recipe timings. A strong emphasis is placed on health and safety, realistic sequencing, and teamwork.
Clear expectations are set: groups must complete and submit an accurate time plan to gain approval to cook in the following lesson. This lesson supports assessment preparation, independent learning, and effective practical management, and is suitable for KS3 Food Technology or Hospitality and Catering pathways.
