This Young Leaders scheme enables children to develop their own leadership skills as well as enhancing others sporting experience in school. They will become a vital part of the playground by inspiring others to become more active socially, physically and mentally. The Young Leaders development will be mostly through a student-centered approach where the teacher becomes the facilitator of learning rather than the leader of the activities. It was developed by myself when working along side a member of Youth Sport Trust as a way to engage more children to become active during their lunchtime. So far, it has proven to be hugely successful.

This scheme consists of a booklet where pupils are given tasks to complete following five values: Passion, Respect, Self-Belief, Team Work and Honesty.

The tasks include: creating their own definition for respect, teaching small activities on the playground during lunch as well as designing and delivering their very own assembly.

Pupils who work hard, and complete these tasks can be rewarded with things such as a Young Leaders jumper, water bottles and possibly trips out of school.

Personally, when selecting Young Leaders for the year I prefer to send out an application form for them to complete if they wish to apply for the position. If then successful, they will be interviewed before finding out if they have become a Young Leader or not. This helps the scheme to look and feel important around the school and shows the children that high standards are needed at all times.
