The Zodiac Tierkreis

The Zodiac Tierkreis

Activities are designed for use as a starter or plenary activity in German, with some potential for use with a non specialist cover teacher or library based lesson. The language level is aimed at higher level students. The students are presented with the 12 signs of the Zodiac (Tierkreis) and a statement relating to the suggested attributes of a person born under that sign. Students are challenged to translate the statement and this can be a springboard for oral work. There are also 4 black and white slides to facilitate written work as an extension activity. Use of a German /English dictionary is suggested. The whole presentation has 4 activities and 18 slides. Hyperlinks are embedded throughout

Remedy Cards - great effective marking strategy

Remedy Cards - great effective marking strategy

If your pupils are making the same literacy errors over and over again try giving them one of these A5 cards to help them understand the remedy. There is one for spelling, one for capitalisation, one for tenses, one for word order, one for adjective agreement and cases. Pupils use the card as a reading ruler with the next few pieces of work - checking each line of their work against the rules set out on the card. Over a short time it should help raise awareness of key errors and encourage students to check their work in a more productive fashion. When used consistently the cards help eliminate mistakes and increase independent checking of work. When students feel they have achieved their target to improve they stick the card in their book with a pupil comment about the impact it has had. These have proved so effective with my students they voted them the single most effective piece of support they were given all year last year.

German Advent rhyme

German Advent rhyme

A popular but simple advent rhyme allows pupils to reflect on words they already know, some tricky German sounds and how to handle them and gives an insight into German advent. Reading and speaking skills can be developed with this resource. I have used it in Primary 7 and S1. Fröhliche Weihnachten.

The Brothers Grimm

The Brothers Grimm

Nothing major here, but good for cover work or possibly as a starter activity for a cultural lesson. I used this as an extra activity for pupils in a low ability Year 7 group to do once they had finished a speaking assessment in class. Pupils read a short text on the Brothers Grimm and their most famous fairy tales (Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella etc), then answer some questions.
