World Cup Representing Data Activity

World Cup Representing Data Activity

This is a nice activity to use whilst practicing “representing data” generally or towards the end of the year when looking for nice lessons that help teachers improve students work and identify misconceptions. The work is differentiated with the topic chosen to help engage students. Printing the first sheet in A3 will also allow some great “wall worthy work” to be produced. We hope you find this useful, saves time and improves your students presenting data skills. Updated to include the 2018 World Cup.

An Inquiry Based Maths Project with Measure, Fractions & Data Analysis

An Inquiry Based Maths Project with Measure, Fractions & Data Analysis

Help the chickens escape a life of drudgery with this week long inquiry based math project focusing on animal rights. It offers collaborative learning and hands on inquiry requiring the children to solve problems, think critically and apply their knowledge of measure, area, data analysis, fractions, ratio tables and word problems as they help: Chickens to escape a factory farm with the help of the fastest farm animals Plan and design a chicken farm, chicken coop and run using measure and fractions Research, compare and contrast data of wingspans, analyse data and record their data Build model wings based on measure and research Calculate the amount of food necessary for their chicken farm And much more! Informational text is included that the children will have to identify and use in order to solve the problems. Research will be necessary as the children have to know the various wingspans of certain birds and compare them with chickens. UK & USA spelling included. It culminates in a class presentation of the facts found ,reasoning as to their plan and design of their team’s escape and new chicken coop and run. Comparing and contrasting each group’s work, helps with critical thinking too and communication skills. Wholly differentiated, ( Task B cards are less challenging) you can use it as a summative assessment tool of the skills and standards included. It can be created as a booklet or in a binder, with a front cover included, being used as a goal setting pre assessment for the children. Mix and match the pages to suit your students’ needs. I prefer to have the children work on the design pages individually before they compare their designs within a small group and work together to collaboratively create their group plan of the chicken coop & run and the great escape! This inquiry based math packet is easy to print and go, perfect for an IB PYP Sharing the Planet theme and thoroughly encourages student agency throughout. I designed it for my IB PYP 4th grade class. It can be used 3rd – 5th grade too. You will find the following skills and standards ideally suited for the IB PYP Phases 3 & 4 and CCSS Math for 4th and 5th grade: Number sense and base ten operations Fractions: adding Measure: using measuring tools , area & perimeter Geometry: identifying polygons and angles Data analysis Make math fun, engaging and authentic! You can find many more inquiry based math projects in my store and on my blog. Enjoy! Susan Powers PYPteachingtools.com

World cup of Maths Football activity KS2/ KS3

World cup of Maths Football activity KS2/ KS3

Year groups KS2 and KS3 Learning objective: Comparing data using the mean, median and mode. Activity Students are to calculate the number equivalent of the letters in the names of the national teams taking part in the world cup. They are then to complete the mean, mode, median and range of the data. Each matchday they compare the specified result to find a winner. 3 Points are awarded for a win, 1 for a draw. The teams are then to be placed in a league table, if teams are tied on points then the mode can be used to order them further.

FIFA World Cup 2018 - Comprehension & Maths Activities

FIFA World Cup 2018 - Comprehension & Maths Activities

COMPREHENSION This is a comprehension I made for my year 4 class. There are three different sets: one that can be used like a booklet, where the text and questions are on the same page with mostly retrieval questions one where the text is separate to the questions and questions are a mix of retrieval and more higher order including vocabulary one where the text is separate to the questions and questions are varied from giving evidence from the text to vocabulary questions etc. I think it can be used with high year 2 as well as KS2. The actual information text is attached as reading sheet. Both in word and PDF MATHS This resource consists of the following five mostly differentiated activities related to the World Cup: Problem-solving lesson with notebook and 3 differentiated sheets. Children design new football kit for their favourite national team consisting of tshirts, shorts (and socks) and find all possibilities of combining them when using 2 (3) colours. Bar chart lesson. Children use data from a Workd Cup table and put it into a bar chart. Differentiated. First bar chart in ones up to 6 and children enter amount of world cups won by different nations. Second bar chart in twos up to 6 and children enter amount of world cups won by different nations. Third bar chart in tens up to 230 where children enter amount of goals scored in world cups for several nations. All bar charts have at least 5 follow-up questions. First two probably more suited to KS1, last one to KS2. Symmetry activity. Children use pictures of flags of all participating teams which are included and sort them into symmetrical and not symmetrical. Included is another sheet on explaining our reasoning - choose two non-symmetrical flags - what would need to be changed so they are symmetrical, explain. Sorting Activity: Children use pictures of flags of all participating teams which are included and sort them using their own criteria into a Venn or Carroll diagram. A quick activity on comparing two flags - how are they the same and how are they different. One activity where children use information on who won the world cup when and put the countries in chronological order by year. One scaffolded sheet and one not scaffolded. All activities attached as word and pdf files in case the word files don’t open properly. I SELL BOTH SEPARATELY AS WELL IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SAVE MONEY.

Football World Cup 2018 Whodunnit Activity Yr 6 Statistics

Football World Cup 2018 Whodunnit Activity Yr 6 Statistics

This is a ‘whodunnit’ type of activity linked to the Football World Cup trophy being stolen. Students need to work out how it was stolen, at what time and where is can now be found. On the sheet, they are given 6 possible answers for each part of the crime and each time they get an answer correct they are given a clue which enables them to cross out one or two of the possible answers. There are 10 statistics based questions which focus on the Year 6 objectives: Interpret pie charts and use these to solve problems Calculate and interpret the mean as an average This activity could be done as individuals, pairs and small groups. The answer sheet has 10 boxes for any working out. Simply print out the 10 questions, cut up and place around the classroom so students can move between them (or you could have them passed between students while they sit). I have included a QR code version too.

Coordinates Activities: Differentiated

Coordinates Activities: Differentiated

As I’ve said before, I teach in a ‘football CRAZY’ class, who will engage with almost anything if it’s related to football. With that in mind, I have created this activity to use when teaching your children about coordinates. INCLUDED: *1 higher ability activity. Children will need to identify the coordinates in which Ronaldo passes the ball. The coordinates range between positive and negative numbers for that extra challenge. *I lower ability activity: Children will need to identify the coordinates in which Ronaldo passes the ball. The coordinates are within positive numbers. *Answer sheets for both activities. This is NOT a complete lesson package, it is simply the activity in which you can use alongside your own lesson to check children’s understanding of the topic. Please leave a review to let me know how you and your class got on with this resource. :)

How Many Animals? - Count and Graph!

How Many Animals? - Count and Graph!

**Early Stage 1 - Mathematics - Data ** **Outcomes Addressed: ** MAe-17SP: represents data and interprets data displays made from objects. MAe-1WM: describes mathematical situations using everyday language, actions, materials and informal recordings. MAe-3WM: uses concrete materials and/or pictorial representations to support conclusions. I created this worksheet and used it during my Kindergarten placement. Students were able to work through it independently and was their first attempt of collecting and representing data on their own. **Tips: ** Students might like to cover the animals with counters to assist them in counting. Allocate a colour for each animal; students use that colour to circle/group the ‘like-objects’ (animals) so that they can count them clearly.
