A poetry assessment lesson suitable for KS3 or KS4 focusing on the poem The Cry of the Children by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Too often we concentrate on the famous men of the Romantic era and bypass significant works by their female counterparts. Redress the balance with me! A starter on historical context, objectives and clear assessment criteria are given to help students achieve an empathetic and critical response to the poem. This was used in both my middle ability and top set classes, but I have also included a PowerPoint on inference to support their answers.

This is everything you need to present The Three Fates to your students for the first time or as a revision resource. I have included a biography page with pertinent information on her life and interests as well as context slides on the Greek myth of Sisyphus. The poem is broken down into line-by-line analysis. The poem can be printed from https://www.poetrylibrary.edu.au/poets/dobson-rosemary/the-three-fates-0192129 The assessment question is on the language, structure and form used to show thoughts on life and death. There are LOs, questions with answers on the next slide for each stanza of the poem. The question is broken down as I would do for my GCSE students, with a success criteria and sentence starters and a clear PEE worksheet if needed. I’ve included a mark scheme based on the iGCSE Songs of Ourselves poetry exam, but this could easily be changed to your curriculum. A separate slide included has key vocabulary with a range of activities. These are a combination of ten words either in the poem (‘aberration’) or useful for describing the poem (eternity, continual…). Enjoy!

A complete lesson with resources to support students answering an iGCSE style essay question (although it would be easily adapted to another curriculum). The focus is on the techniques used to present the farmhand’s thoughts and feelings. There are pre-differentiated worksheets to support different abilities. There is also a line by line analysis essay, which is not the CIE’s preferred method. You could use this pretty solid 7 or 8 essay and change the structure to thematic and create a grade 9 essay. There are questions to guide the students first through fourth readings covering vocabulary, imagery, structure and meaning. I have also provided a biographical page and made clear links between Baxter’s life and the setting and character created in Farmhand. A good introduction to non-fiction writing, newspapers, reporting and analysis. A Fake or Real quiz on stories reported online to help students become critical readers. The key word is 'Sensationalist'. A range of headlines are given from different sources and students are asked to write their own versions of headlines which are not sensationalist. They enjoyed this reverse version of what they are often asked to do. The lesson is generally upbeat and humorous, but as it goes along there are some serious points being made about sexism and racism and how these ideas are reinforced in the media. They are asked to analyse the introduction to a Daily Mail article in the development, picking up on word choices in order to show the writer's purpose and message.

A complete set of resources for teaching Morris’ poem “Little Boy Crying”. This is on the Songs of Ourselves iGCSE poetry exam for CIE, but is a great poem to explore this controversial topic. I have read online that it is based on a childhood memory of Morris being hit by his father and then returning to this as an adult disciplining his son. This seems totally likely, but I haven’t found confirmation from a trustworthy source. There is a descriptive writing PPT included which will allow students to explore how they create imagery in description before going on to look at Morris’ use of descriptive techniques and imagery in his poem. There is also a separate PPT with key vocabulary to explore in a physical and engaging way which I thought would be useful for weaker readers or EAL students. I have included everything in the main presentation that you would need to teach this poem for the first time,for revision, or to even ask students to pre-teach from. The lesson objectives (on each slide) and end of lesson exam-style essay question ask students to explore how the language, structure and form present the themes of discipline and parent-child relationships. (For a higher ability class, you could split these two.) and the starter activities, biographical information and the guided questions (with answers provided on the next slide) help students meet that outcome. There is support provided for students’ essay answers in the form of sentence starters,simplified assessment objectives and mark schemes, sentence starters, paragraph structures, and a peer/self-marking slide. A really interesting lesson to explore students relationships with their parents. Enjoy!

This part has lesson by lesson story writing support for students of all abilities as well as extracts from a range of fantasy stories to be performed, analysed and inspired by. There is more of a focus on spelling and grammar skills in starters for these writing lessons covering apostrophes (contraction and omission); there, their and they're; punctuating speech; paragraphing (how to develop and when to move on) and tension building techniques as well as clear instructions for acceptable and unacceptable endings (...or are there????? Yes. Yes there are.) During writing, we listened to the soundtrack from Oblivion, which is suitably epic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpqSdORmCX4 Lesson 7 was a Geography cross-over lesson to support map making. The Hogfather would make a nice extract to analyse in the run up to Christmas. The last section, writing up, was run in conjunction with ICT and Art, giving students the chance to produce their own short story collections which were then sold at school to raise money. The kids and their parents loved seeing their work in print and I'm sure yours will too! Reviews are much loved and appreciated!

Everyone needs a hand with structure and planning. This is a simple one-page word document which breaks down a story into 8 paragraphs. Students can draw a picture for each box to help them visualise the most important part; higher ability students can write key vocabulary and style notes; or, for less able or SEN students, they can write a sentence or two and this can become a topic sentence for developing later.

I had a whole stack of newspapers in my classroom which the cleaners were threatening to throw away and an end of term lesson with my year 7 students. I put together this selection of the games we played to get students engaged with this text type (which lots of them said they rarely, if ever, saw at home). Most are set up as team building challenges, but there are several which would make great independent activities as a starter for a lesson involving or analysing newspapers. There are artistic, kinesthetic and, of course, literacy- based challenges suitable for a variety of ages and abilities. Nothing that isn't fun! Very few materials are required for these activities apart from the newspapers: sticky tape, any scrap materials, marker pens, A3 paper and glue would cover every challenge and most can be done with nothing more than a pen. Hi! This is a complete set of resources to teach Muliebrity by Sujata Bhatt. This poem is on the iGCSE curriculum as part of the SOngs of Ourselves anthology. I’ve included everything I would want to put on each slide including dates, titles, LOs, and detailed analysis of language and structure for each part. There are biographical details and context slides as well as the BBC news article to introduce some of the concepts to students and there are plenty of games/activities to learn new vocabulary either in the poem or useful to describe the poem. The final lesson assessment has an exam style question about the girl in Muliebrity which is broken down, planning is provided, as are sentence starters, paragraph success criteria, a mark scheme, self- or peer-assessment slides and a reflective plenary as well. There should be more than enough for a lesson here so you can come back to some of the activities for revision. Enjoy!

A variety of whole lessons reading lesser-known dystopian literature and tying these in with students' creative writing of a dystopian narrative. There is also a practice reading comprehension and a final reading comprehension assessment. This scheme of work is designed for middle to top set students at GCSE level. I found all the students really engaged with the topic and already knew loads of dystopian works of literature, films and computer games, so had to stretch them to read lesser known works. I've tried as far as possible to make this relevant to their interests and to be representative of a range of backgrounds instead of just the classic "dead, white males". My students really enjoyed this unit of work and I hope yours do too! Contains: Structuring narratives in interesting ways (very useful for getting A*s) Analysing and writing speech in ways that show originality and flair (as well as accuracy of punctuation) Creating original dystopian worlds Creating original dystopian characters Close analysis of individual words and basic PEE reading answers Improving and extending vocabulary Recognising satire and comedy in film and literature (Idiocracy and Harrison Vonnegut) because, frankly, all this dystopian stuff could get a bit depressing otherwise! A detailed and thorough comprehension of a (student-friendly version) of Stephen King's The End of the Whole Mess with optional scaffolding which should build towards GCSE style detailed essays covering plot summaries, close analysis, evaluation of word choice, structure, messages, themes, conventions, language features and more.

A range of games and activities to make students work on their vocabulary. These work fantastically with any group from EAL KS3 to KS5. They can all be done independently, in pairs or in teams and most have a competitive element. I use these as starters in English lessons, but my school used to have a Literacy Form Time every Monday when we would play one of these. Most don't require any printing but can be adapted into a more physical resource if this suits your group. These always make fun and engaging links into creative writing lessons or literacy lessons. My students love them! I even caught some of my year 7s playing the Alphabet Game at lunch! I hope your students enjoy them just as much.

An entire, lesson by lesson SOW with guided reading questions, games, activities and assessments. Although this is reading, there are lots of writing assessments woven in so that students see how the disciplines support each other. I hope it inspires some of your students the way mine have taken to it! I used the pdf of the book which is available online for some of my weaker students and also watched the television series. The resource as a whole was excellent for my G&T students who really enjoyed the family's eccentric lifestyles and saw more than a bit of their own lives paralleled despite the historical context. There are lots of opportunities for cross-curricular learning with Geography and History, so speak to your fellow teachers and see if you can cover it at the same time as they are teaching about WW2, post-colonisation, Greece, coastlines, or Globalisation. This lesson uses UA Fanthorpe's poem Not My Best Side, which satirises the painting Saint George and the Dragon by Paolo Uccello, as a model for satirical writing about a series of paintings (also included on the Powerpoint). There are comprehension questions to go with each part of the poem and self-assessment criteria at the end. Makes for a good one-off lesson in any writing scheme, a Creative Writing club prompt, or as part of a scheme of work about fairytales or a PSHE lesson on subverting stereotypes.
