Each lesson plan follows the format of a mini lesson and provides an opportunity for students to turn and talk about how they visualize while reading. This set of lesson plans, resources, and activities is for use with The Lotus Seed by Sherry Garland. It can be used for whole group, small group, and independent instruction – which makes these resources a smart choice for literacy centers or Reader’s Workshop. Here’s What You’ll Get and Why: My goal was to make it easy to teach readers how to think about The Lotus Seed using a variety of comprehension strategies. That’s why I’ve included page by page lesson plans, guided practice worksheets, and text specific reader’s notebook prompts for the following strategies: Retelling and Summarizing Making Connections Visualizing Determining Importance I also created an Extension Activity for early finishers. I’ve also included a word study lesson plan and set of activities, because, much like vocabulary, I find that word study works best within context. As a result, I have identified word patterns within trade books and have developed lesson plans and resources based on the word study that can be done with specific books. The lesson plan and set of resources for The Lotus Seed focuses on Suffix -ed and includes the following: Lesson Plan Interactive Activity Practice Page Independent Word Work Next, I find that vocabulary instruction works best when it’s done within the context of books that students are already reading. This set of lesson plans, resources, and activities is for use with Doctor De Soto, Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, The Memory String, and The Polar Express. These resources can be used for whole group, small group, and independent instruction – which makes these them a smart choice for literacy centers or Reader’s Workshop. Each lesson plan follows the format of a mini lesson and provides an opportunity for students to turn and talk about how they visualize while reading. Students will also have the opportunity to practice the strategy with a page by page guided “worksheet” and write about their reading with a common core aligned Reader’s notebook prompt. Here's What You'll Get and Why: My goal was to make it easy to teach readers how to think about books through the lens of comprehension strategies. This book bundle will help you teach readers how to visualize while reading popular picture books for third grade readers. You could also make copies of the covers of each of the books used in this book bundle and hang them with the poster to remind students of the work they did while reading each of the books.
