I am a head of English who has been teaching for 9 years in middle school and Primary. For the last 5 years, I have also been a year 5 and year 3 class teacher. I have been a TES contributor for a while, with free and premium resources and I always upload resources that I have used successfully in my own teaching. I hope you might find them useful too!

Classic and Narrative Poems: The Highwayman

(36)
This is a ppt I have built up over a few years with resources for teaching year 5 pupils about the poem The Highwayman. It includes slides with questions and key tasks, activities sheets to explore character, and question cards that can can be discussed in groups. It also includes a Connect 4 game where pupils have to identify the poetic techniques in the poem. The main written outcome from the unit is for pupils to write an account of the events in the poem in role. If you would like visual resources to support this, there are two very good YouTube clips online.

I have reloaded this ppt after a few people found difficulties opening it. I hope this is better! I have built up this PowerPoint while teaching Myths, Legends and Fables to year 5. It includes slides of information and stories, worksheets (like the heart rate graph and the cartoon storyboard), and cards that can be cut out for games and activities. I hope others might find it helpful too! Christianne:)

Poetic techniques connect 4

This powerpoint contains all the resources needed to make a game of Poetry Connect 4. The first grid is a game mat with examples of poetic devices, similies, metaphors, personification and alliteration, and the second is the cards. We play in 4s (2 vs. 2), with pupils trying to cover 4 squares in a row by identifying the technique used. I have used this resource in years 5, 6 and 7, and it really helps pupils to remember the techniques!

These presentations and resources were made for whole staff training and termly targets that were implemented across the curriculum in our middle school. They focus on sentence structure, punctuation and reading skills, and the poster slides were on display in every classroom. I hope others might find them useful. Christianne:)

KS2 Key features of instructions: text analysis activity for HA and MA.

(1)
These are resources for a group carousel activity for analysing and comparing a range of instructional texts. Each group focuses on a particular key feature as they move around the room to study and evaluate a range of examples and they can then present their findings to the class. The PowerPoint includes task cards for each group that explain their 'expert area' to focus on and these have been tailored and colour- coded to suit different reading ability groups from 1- 5 (5 being the most able). Areas include: text layout, use of images, clarity of instructions, use of verbs and descriptive detail. The PowerPoint also includes recording sheets for groups to use. They will need to complete their coloured sections as they discuss each text. At the end of the activity, when all sections are filled in, this will give a complete analysis of each instructional text that groups can refer to (in their books or on the working wall). The resources can be used with any sets of instructional texts: over the years, I have used these to study instructions for Viking longboat models and recipes for Bengali food with MA and HA ability pupils in Year 5.

Year 5 Literacy: Non- chronological reports

This unit of work and PowerPoint of resources were used during our topic of 'Living Together'. After taking on the role of explorers and learning about different animals (as well as practising their use of simple, compound and complex sentences), pupils will write two non- chronological reports: the first is about the dangerous species of teachers, who prey on poor, defenceless pupils and the second (the main written outcome of the unit) is about the species of year 5 pupils.

This is a bundle of games and activities to support children to develop their confidence with SPAG vocabulary and skills. I hope they will be a fun way for children to practice their spellings and build key elements of grammar into their writing.

KS2 English: Identifying and using adverbial phrases to build descriptive detail

(0)
This PowerPoint includes definitions and examples of the different types of adverbial phrases, as well as Grammar and writing activities to consolidate children's understanding and encourage them to use adverbial phrases to build and up-level detail in their description. The activities have been split into two sessions - 1) understanding and identifying adverbial phrases and 2) using the different types of adverbial phrases to build sentences and to up-level description - but they can be used for an extended lesson. Each writing activity includes answers or modelled examples to use. I used these resources with an HA group in year 5 who were writing a setting description of a factory during the Industrial Revolution, but they could be used for writing and up- levelling any narrative description and for any KS2 or lower KS3 group.

Text detectives: AF question cards for guided reading

This is a set of KS2 Literacy AF reading question cards that I have in laminated packs on each of my year 5 tables for pupils to use in Guided reading sessions. They can be used by a TA as prompts to support their questioning of children as they read a shared text, but I often ask the children to use a selected card to ask each other questions.

KS2 English: Sentence builder game to develop sentence structure

This is a board game to support KS2 pupils to develop the structure of their sentences. As pupils role the die and move around the board, they must edit their sentences in different ways, according to the instructions on the square they have landed on. Changes include adding conjunctions, building complex sentences, experimenting with relative clauses and adding description with adverbial phrases and expanded noun phrases, Pupils can be independent players, or work together in pairs. The ppt includes an instruction card and a game board which can be enlarged and laminated.

I have made these documents to support teachers to plan focused, purposeful learning challenges for teaching and assessing Writing in their English lessons. The bold statements on the left are end of year expectations for Composition and SPAG (specifically vocabulary, punctuation and grammar). I have then broken down each bold statement into focused learning challenges on the right, which can be used as small steps for pupils to build their skills and confidence as they work towards their end of year expectations. Every teacher does not have to use every target; they can choose those appropriate to their ability groups, or use all of them as small building blocks to build up understanding.

They can be used long term plans as they show all of the end of year expectations for Composition, SPAG and handwriting that pupils need to work towards achieving during the year. The documents could also be used as target sheets for pupils to stick into their books in order to track their progress in writing. The columns on the right can be used by teachers to record 3 dates on which the objectives have been achieved. This bundle could be a perfect pack to support English departments to ensure consistent planning and progression of skills across the Primary phase.

KS2 English: Understanding character through discussion and role play

This powerpoint includes instructions and activities to develop pupil's understanding of character and talking, acting and writing in role. I have used them with Robin Hood and Alice in Wonderland (as well as the poem of The Highwayman), but they could be used with any narrative text you are studying. The powerpoint includes information about freeze frames, thought tracking and discussion activities and I have loved hearing the children's ideas - especially when they really get into their roles! I have found ideas are best once the children are really into the story and the activities have been brilliant to build up their ideas for writing first person accounts, diaries and narratives.
