This induction activity was written for AQA Paper 2, but could be used for any awarding body.
The student task involves them reading the brief summaries of the approaches provided and then doing further research. They are placed in one of four groups: - Biological, Behaviourist, Cognitive or Psychodynamic. They prepare a presentations (a poster and a brief talk) that uses the psychological approach that they have been given to explain the behaviour in the scenario. They will then be expected to give a brief critique of their explanation (What is wrong with it? What alternative explanation can you think of?)
The homework task is to write an overview explaining the behaviour in the scenario from all four approaches and giving a critique of each.
This works really well as an induction activity as it enables the teacher to perform an initial assessment of students’ strengths and weaknesses.

The ATP has published a new document giving ethics guidance for student practical research activities.
Members have been telling us for some time that they feel the need for clear and detailed ethics guidance in fulfilling practical research requirements for various specifications. This new guidance is therefore relevant for student research in psychology for A-level, Higher, GCSE, National 5, and indeed any pre-tertiary course in schools and colleges.
Remember that it is only guidance, not a rule book, and responsibility for ethical practice ultimately rests with researcher, teacher and institution. As well as referring to the BPS ethics documents, you must use professional judgment in ensuring that student research work is ethical, and we hope that you find this new guidance helpful in this respect.
