Year 4 Addition & Subtraction - Problem-Solving Investigations

9 Resources
These in-depth maths investigations are open-ended problem solving activities for Year 4 children. In-depth Investigation: Make 100 Given a pattern of four one-digit numbers, children attempt to make a total of exactly 100. In-depth Investigation: Total £10 Using only digits 1-9 without the ‘5’, children find all possible pairs of amounts to make £10. In-depth Investigation: Cats and Dogs Children work to solve a puzzle involving adding two 3-digit numbers. They find several possible solutions, and then invent their own puzzle. In-depth Investigation: Hole-y Subtractions Children create 3-digit palindromic numbers with a ‘hole’ (i.e. a zero) in the middle. They subtract 3-digit numbers with equal numbers of 1s, 10s and 100s and identify patterns in their answers. In-depth Investigation: Present Prices Children use logic and addition, along with some trial and improvement to solve a problem involving money. In-depth Investigation: Wonderful 1089! Children add two 3-digit numbers and subtract a pair of 3-digit numbers to find patterns. They use mathematical reasoning to begin to explain what they find. In-depth Investigation: Mobile Subtractions Children select 3 contiguous numbers from a mobile phone display and create a subtraction. In-depth Investigation: Subtraction Trios Children look for patterns in answers when subtracting 3-digit numbers from 4-digit numbers with consecutive digits. In-depth Investigation: Prime Addition Squares Children add sets of three 3-digit numbers to find patterns in a magic square based on prime numbers. These investigations will develop maths meta-skills, support open-ended questioning and logical reasoning, and enable children to learn to think mathematically and articulate mathematical ideas. These problem-solving investigations come from our Year 4 Maths Blocks. Each Hamilton maths block contains a complete set of planning and resources to teach a term’s worth of objectives for one of the National Curriculum for England’s maths areas.

Year 3 Place Value - Problem-Solving Investigations

4 Resources
These in-depth maths investigations are open-ended problem solving activities for Year 3 children. In-depth Investigation 1: Three Coins Using exactly three coins, children work out how many amounts can be made between £1 and £2. In-depth Investigation 2: Money Bags Children use their knowledge of counting in 10s to solve a problem involving money. In-depth Investigation: Counter Place Value Children place counters on a place value grid to make 3-digit numbers and then use logic to ensure they have made all the combinations. In-depth Investigation: Lost Logic Children use their knowledge of inverse operations to solve a logic problem. In-depth Investigation: Guess my Number Children use their knowledge of 3-digit numbers, rounding, and properties of numbers to work out a mystery number. These investigations will develop maths meta-skills, support open-ended questioning and logical reasoning, and enable children to learn to think mathematically and articulate mathematical ideas. These problem-solving investigations come from our Year 3 Maths Blocks. Each Hamilton maths block contains a complete set of planning and resources to teach a term’s worth of objectives for one of the National Curriculum for England’s maths areas.

Year 5 Multiplication & Division - Problem-Solving Investigations

7 Resources
These in-depth maths investigations are open-ended problem solving activities for Year 5 children. In-depth Investigation: Prime Differences Children find out if prime numbers become less frequent as we consider sets of larger numbers. In-depth Investigation: Excellent Eights Children explore patterns when multiplying numbers with consecutive digits by 8. The PowerPoint can be used to guide your class through this investigation. In-depth Investigation: LCM Squares Children use trial and improvement to find the smallest possible total on a square of lowest common multiples. In-depth Investigation: Division Remainder Patterns Children look at patterns of remainders in 4-digit numbers when dividing by numbers 3 to 6. Can they establish a rule? In-depth Investigation: What an Odd Thing! Children create a triangle of odd numbers and identify patterns when rows are summed or their end numbers are averaged. In-depth Investigation: Remainder Runners Children divide 1234, 2345, 3456 by 3, 4, 5 … 12 and look for patterns in the remainders. In-depth Investigation: Reverse Digits, Same Product Children find the product of a pair of 2-digit numbers then reverse the digits of both numbers and find an identical product. These investigations will develop maths meta-skills, support open-ended questioning and logical reasoning, and enable children to learn to think mathematically and articulate mathematical ideas. These problem-solving investigations come from our Year 5 Maths Blocks. Each Hamilton maths block contains a complete set of planning and resources to teach a term’s worth of objectives for one of the National Curriculum for England’s maths areas.

Year 4 Place Value - Problem-Solving Investigations

4 Resources
These in-depth maths investigations are open-ended problem solving activities for Year 4 children. In-depth Investigation: No Zero Children investigate how many numbers between one and ten thousand have a zero. They use their understanding of place value in numbers with up to 4-digits. In-depth Investigation: Magic Chains Children use their knowledge of inverse operations to quickly work out a sequence of calculations. In-depth Investigation: Tell the Teacher Children consider whether given calculations are harder or easier and work out a scoring system. In-depth Investigation: Roman Numeral Teaser Children apply their knowledge of place value to a different number system.
