This full resourced lesson describes to younger pupils what the 2017 general election is they can understand. It introduces them to key vocabulary such as ‘voting’, ‘Member of Parliament’, ‘House of Commons’ and ‘ballot box’. All you need to do is slice up 30 pieces of paper and a cardboard box for your class to use to vote! During this interactive lesson, pupils will learn how people vote, who they vote for and what MPs do. They then vote for a class MP / student councillor to give voting a try themselves!

This topic was taught in the morning in the run up to the submission of writing data for Year 6 as a way of gaining evidence ready for moderation. It came in very useful when moderation day did arrive!

This week of Literacy focuses on writing persuasive letters. It includes an opportunity to read good examples, look at the skills involved in writing persuasive letters, planning the letter and an opportunity to write one. Five, fully resourced lessons all for under £1 a lesson! Day 1: Reading good examples of persuasive letters and looking at the features of persuasive writing. Day 2: Skills lesson focusing on using strong sentence openers. Day 3: Lesson about Fair Trade to generate an argument for buying Fair Trade produce. This lesson includes information about Fair Trade for pupils to record and discuss - all the research has been done for you! Day 4: Planning their persuasive letter on differentiated planning grids. The class really enjoyed learning about the celebrities in this week's Literacy lessons, especially Taylor Swift and Christiano Ronaldo! Five, fully resourced lessons all for under £1 each! Day 1: Reading comprehension focus - children read biographies of a celebrity and answer differentiated (retrieval and inference) questions about the text. This gives them an opportunity to experience high quality, short biographies. Day 2: Children practise using adverbial phrases ready to use them in their own writing. Differentiated worksheets (as for all lessons) are included for their activities. Day 3: Children practise organising information into paragraphs by sorting information from biographies into subheadings. Day 4&5: Children write their own biography about either Christiano Ronaldo or Taylor Swift after going through a good example on the IWB. Differentiated success criteria is included.
