Excellent way to practice the concept and process of poetry analysis using the wonderful words-to-rhythm technique of Benjamin Zephaniah. This poem resource introduces Benjamin’s rationale and arguments for becoming vegan and so provides a good topic to debate for a speaking coursework topic as well. Introduces 7 analytic terms and scaffolds a PEE paragraph.

Excellent for disengaged pupils or SEN who have real trouble identifying with poetry. This resource compiles two lessons; the first, on urban wild style and the beginnings of hip-hop in NYC in the 1980s, and the second, on Langston Hughes and his ruminations both on Harlem and on civil rights. It attempts to get the students to identify with the feelings behind both types of artists and the motivation for writing poetry/lyrics. Engaging and emotional with pictures of the South Bronx ghetto community from which the Sugar Hill Gang got their inspiration.
