Instructions/introduction from book:
This workbook has been designed to suit a range of ages, from primary to secondary stage students.
Teachers often comment on their students’ listening skills, wishing that they were better or that they could concentrate for longer. Why not dedicate some time to improving these skills?
This book has been designed using a tried and tested method for developing listening and concentration skills with short, fun activities for students. It is most effective when used at least weekly, though it is also the ideal resource to pick up occasionally when listening is becoming a particular issue.
The listening activities are progressively more difficult as you move through the book so that you can select the level of difficulty/vocabulary appropriate to the young people you are teaching. Be flexible with size/orientation/detail if not specified in the instructions. The answers are there as a guide.
For inclusion purposes, you may wish to adapt this for learners in your class who need particular support and, as with every teaching resource, it may not suit all learners.
It’s simple! Each student needs an A4 sheet of paper or digital drawing tool (eg. iPad app). Read each instructions two times only. Students need to follow the instructions to complete the picture as accurately as they can. The teacher can then reveal the drawing and students can self-assess, peer-assess or the teacher can collect in to mark. You might wish to incentivise with rewards or keep track with a score out of ten to monitor progress.
Try a sample from our brand new book, Listening Missions. Help young people of all ages (7+) to improve their listening and concentration skills with a clear programme that helps them to build on their skills in a fun way. This scheme of work is ideal for weekly use for optimum progression or can be used to dip in and out of when required to re-focus classes.
The activities are varied and fun, each with a manageable 10 instructions to follow. It’s easy to record a score out of ten for each instruction correctly followed. The visual focus of the resources helps to elevate the fun element of the listening activity.
